Indian scientists create solar plastic that charges in rain

A team of researchers from IIT Bombay and IISER Pune has developed a breakthrough “solar plastic” sheet that generates electricity from both sunlight and raindrops. The innovation uses triboelectric nanogenerators embedded with photovoltaic cells. The flexible sheet can be attached to rooftops, umbrellas, electric rickshaws, and disaster tents. In rainfall-heavy regions like the Northeast and Kerala, these plastics offer an alternative to traditional solar panels. The team is in talks with state governments and defense forces for large-scale production.
